Instructor of the Week: SSgt. Goll

Staff Sgt. Travis Goll, 359th Training Squadron F-35 crew chief instructor and native of Garner, Iowa, has been in the Air Force for 11 years and is the Instructor of the Week at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, for the week of Aug. 15-21, 2017.

Most significant accomplishments:

“When I was station at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, I performed a jet engine replacement on an F-16 from start to finish that took more than 14 hours,” Goll said. “It was very gratifying to see that aircraft take off and land safely.”

“Another significant accomplishment I experienced was when I was deployed to Iraq,” he continued. “I had the honor of meeting a Tuskegee Airmen who was visiting with the United Service Organization; it was very humbling to meet a great hero. I was also selected to be one of the first crew chiefs assigned to the F-35. The F-35 presented many new challenges and it was very exciting for me to meet them head on.”

“Finally, while stationed at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, I had the opportunity to meet another American Hero, Ed Saylor,” Goll said. “Colonel Saylor was a Doolittle Raider during World War II and it was one of my highest honors to be able to talk to him for more than an hour.”

Airman’s story:

“I grew up on a 160 acre farm in Iowa where my family raised cattle and hogs,” Goll said. “I acquired my love for airplanes from my father who had his private pilot license and would take me flying throughout my childhood. I knew I wanted to be around airplanes as much as possible so, I decided to join the Air Force as a mechanic on fighters.”

Supervisor comments:

“Sergeant Goll is entrusted with the responsibility to train brand new Airmen how to effectively and safely repair the most advanced and expensive weapons platform in history,” said Tech. Sgt. Kevin Wecker, F-35 instructor supervisor. “His technical expertise coupled with his years of experience on the F-35 is vital to our mission success at the 359th Training Squadron. The knowledge and skills Sergeant Goll has acquired throughout his time in the F-35 program is also very important to the implementation of new training. He reviews, edits, and finalizes multiple training objectives regularly. Sergeant Goll is a true subject matter expert.”
