The 82nd Communications Squadron defeated the Sheppard Fire Department 39-31 last night in intramural basketball action. The win follows the 82nd CS's loss to the 82nd Security Forces Squadron Dec. 5.

"We played a lot better than last week," said Derick Miller, 82nd CS coach. "We practiced a lot of basic skills (over the last week), and that really helped us to take better shots."

Initially it looked like the Fire Department would dominate, continually denying the 82nd CS the chance to score. Halfway through the first half, the 82nd CS made their first basket and didn't look back. Soon after scoring, they had taken the lead; which they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the match-up.

With a score of 23-18 at the half and an 82nd CS lead, the teams spent halftime practicing their shots and taking a moment to rest.

Both teams maintained a consistent pace, keeping the score apart by only a few baskets. A last minute drive by the 82nd CS led to their victory, 39-31.

"I think they've (the 82nd CS) got a lot of potential," Miller said. "We just need to come together as a team. The more we play, the more we practice, the better we will do."

While it was an intense game, both teams were the epitome of sportsmanship, continually patting each other on the back. Whether it was an opponent who was given an unfair call or a teammate who drove it home to score, there was always someone there to offer congratulations or reassurance.
