For decades military chaplains have been helping Airmen remain spiritually fit and ready to accomplish their daily duties.

Chaplains not only offer religious support services, but they also help Airmen build professional relationships, establish healthy coping mechanisms and cultivate a force with strong values. This year, the Sheppard Chapel staff hosted a Super Bowl party to do just that.

“We provide an opportunity for our Airmen in Training to have a facility that’s non-alcoholic and safe for them to enjoy,” said Capt. Edward Jordan, Sheppard chaplain. “Our mission is to ensure the health of our Airmen in the spiritual pillar … knowing that spiritual health is defined differently for all Airmen, we allow them to be who they are as spiritual beings and we’re here as chaplains to help them with their spiritual care.”

The party was open not just to Airmen in Training, but also to all Sheppard Airmen and their families. Showing the game on the big screen, a game of pool and nearly 250 pizzas were just a few activities offered to Airmen throughout the night.

“We are trying to tell them by serving them, you are important … that’s the reason we are here for them,” said Capt. Carlos Ramos, another Sheppard Chaplain. “This is a place where we take care of them.”

The Chapel staff served more than 400 people on Super Bowl Sunday, investing nearly $800 in their spiritual health, morale and well-being. Sheppard chaplains also serve nearly 180,000 visitors annually, with the largest Airman Ministry Center in the Air Force.
