10/10/2012 - SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --

Team Sheppard,

Being a good wingman means taking care of the person next to you, especially when that person is hurting.

As many of you know, October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which presents us all with an opportunity to be good wingmen. We all have a responsibility to look out for each other, especially in instances of domestic violence.

There are several events ongoing throughout the month to highlight domestic violence prevention. On October 1st, the base supported a "Black Eye Campaign" to encourage awareness about domestic violence. You may have also noticed the purple silhouettes placed at the gates to show that domestic violence affects everyone. Finally, there is a "Pledge for Peaceful Relationships" to encourage individuals to support each other in healthy ways.

Family Advocacy has been instrumental in putting this month's events together. They offer informational classes year round to help deal with such issues as anger management, parenting, relationship enhancement, being a new dad, and car seat safety, as well as referral services.

My request to you is this: don't let the chance to be a good wingman pass you by. Know your resources and know where you can turn to help your people.

Fanman
Brigadier General Mike Fantini
Commander, 82nd Training Wing
