Sheppard firefighters help control wildfires, save homes

Firefighters work to contain a wildfire that destroyed three homes near Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, April 15. The base provided 19 firefighters and eight trucks to help battle at least five area wildfires, which were driven by hurricane-force winds and drought conditions. Three homes-one belonging to a Sheppard Airman-were destroyed and the fires forced the evacuation of one of Sheppard's housing areas for several hours.(U.S. Air Force photo/Mike Mckito)

Sheppard firefighters help control wildfires, save homes

Sheppard Air Force Base provided 19 firefighters and eight trucks to help battle wildfires near the base April 15. By deploying "crash" trucks from the airfield, the Sheppard crews were able to put water on the fires quickly and get the fires under control. Three homes were destroyed, including the home of a Sheppard Airman, but no one was hurt and officials say the damage could have been much worse without Sheppard's assistance.(U.S. Air Force photo/Mike Mckito)
