<![CDATA[Retired Air Force mechanic brings smiles to Sheppard]]> http://www.sheppard.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123466033 The holidays bring about a spirit of giving for most, but for retired Air Force aircraft mechanic Harold Adams, the season of giving is year-round.

Adams has been visiting the commissary here twice a month for more than two years to give handmade wooden toys to children. This tradition was started by his close friend, who passed away unexpectedly.

"I was there when he passed and I told him, 'If you would trust me, I would take and finish all of the unfinished projects and I would continue giving them away to the kids out here,'" said Adams, who now carries on his late friend's legacy by making all the toys himself.

With the lines of communication open, members of Team Sheppard discussed their ideas with the base leaders. From computer issues to traffic issues, no idea was turned down without being discussed thoroughly.

"My time in the Air Force has taught me that for just about every challenge we might face, there's a young staff sergeant or lieutenant out there who has the solution," Doherty said. "Sometimes it's hard to get that solution to the ears of people who can implement it -- that's the idea here, an open forum to allow the smart people doing the work every day to be heard all the way up the chain of command."

Brig. Gen. Patrick Doherty, 82nd Training Wing commander, said "It isn't the 1990s anymore and there are things the Air Force could afford to do when it had nearly 400,000 active duty members that it can't afford to do now, with nearly 300,000."

Doherty held a "Stop Doing" forum on Dec. 10, 2015, to open a direct line of commination with Sheppard Airmen in an effort to streamline best practices to help the Air Force operate more effectively and efficiently.
