The Green Knights Motorcycle Club and other bike riders thundered through Sheppard June 15 to promote motorcycle awareness and safe riding.

The club paraded through the base for International Motorcycle Awareness Ride to Work Day.

Richard Chamberlin, a Sheppard Fire Department Dispatcher and the clubs president, said this was the first time the club road for Motorcycle Awareness Ride to Work Day. But they plan to ride every year. The club's goal is to mentor young riders about motorcycle safety and promote awareness to all drivers that motorcycles share the roads and need to be watched for.

The Green Knights is a national military motorcycle association whose goal is to inspire camaraderie, safety and encourage mentorship.

With more than 600 motorcycle riders from Sheppard, the safety office is heavily involved with making sure they keep accurate numbers of riders and that they abide by base safety standards. The Green Knights partners with the office to help make sure all riders are in proper personal protective equipment.

"The safety office gives the club 100 percent support; we just make sure they adhere to base safety standards," said James "Ziggy" Zillweger, 82nd Training Wing chief of safety.
