The Sheppard tax office prepares thousands of no-cost tax returns annually for eligible beneficiaries, including active duty military, retirees, and their families, as well as civilian employees.  Providing this service is a huge undertaking which depends largely on volunteers.  With tax season rapidly approaching, we are looking for volunteers to continue this important service to our community.

No pre-existing knowledge of tax preparation is needed to volunteer, since the IRS provides all necessary training.  The training for initial volunteers will be held in Jan. 2017, and will consist of approximately 40 hours of instruction.  Volunteers can be active duty, civilian employees, retirees, or their family members, but active duty and civilian employees must get permission from their supervisor to volunteer.

The tax office can also use help in general assistance and receptionist duties, such as filing, making copies, and answering telephone questions.  Regardless of the amount of time you can volunteer, the tax office can use your help.

For more information about the tax center or to volunteer, contact MSgt Shannon Edwards at 940-676-4262.
