9/5/2012 - SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 51st annual Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) fund raising drive begins on Sep.10 and runs through Oct. 10.

A breakfast at the Sheppard Club was held Sep. 5 to kick off the campaign and raise awareness of the CFC.

The mission of the CFC is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

CFC is the largest and most successful workplace-giving campaign in the world, raising more than $272.7 million in 2011 and crossing the $7 billion threshold for the first time in its 50-year history. This number includes federal civilian employees, military and postal workers.

Last year the base's goal was $200,000, but Team Sheppard exceeded that amount by almost 25 percent, raising $247,000.

The wing's goal this year is $205,000.

Key workers and points of contacts have been identified, trained and are ready to start work. Each group and squadron has representatives that can answer any questions that may come up.

Catalogs have been distributed throughout the base and if interested, participants can donate to one or as many organizations as they prefer. There are two easy ways to give: by payroll deduction or cash contributions.

The base will be holding several events to support CFC this year. One of those events is a four-person team bowling tournament being hosted by the 82nd Mission Support Group on Oct. 5th from 1200-1500.

"Last year, the CFC of North Texas and Jackson County, Okla., brought in $359,345 for local charities," said Capt Charles Lueker, 82nd MDSS medical logistics flight commander. "Donating through the CFC is an efficient and cost effective way to ensure your donation dollars are going to a cause you can believe in."

In 1964, the first "combined" campaign was officially named the Combined Federal Campaign, or CFC. By 1971, all the campaigns were "combined." On March 3, 1971 President Richard Nixon made CFC the uniform fundraising method for the federal services.
