10/12/2012 - SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Sheppard Air Force Base Fire Prevention Office held it's third annual Firefighter Olympics on Oct. 12 at the main fire station.

Teams participated in several activities including a dummy drag, water cone knock down race, can on a rope water race and a fill the barrel with water race.

The purpose of the event was to allow the teams to experience what a firefighter must be ready and able to do in their daily routine and to develop an appreciation for the job that firefighters do in supporting their communities.

The Firefighter Olympics event was part of Fire Prevention Week, held Oct. 7-13, which was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

"The Olympics originated from the Smoke House Challenge in the pass where teams of two would search a simulated smoke filled environment," said Rodney Ryalls,
Sheppard's Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention. " Other bases were hosting Fire Prevention Olympics and we decided that we would give it a try, it's been great success."

For the third year in a row, first place went to the 366th Training Squadron. The winning team consisted of: Staff Sergeant Kyle Nason, Staff Sergeant Paul Brow, Staff Sergeant Carl Dill, Staff Sergeant Ryan Locke and Staff Sergeant Cooper Gibson of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Preliminary School.

"It was a great competition and gave me a greater appreciation for what the firefighters do on a daily basis," said Nason.
