Sheppard Air Force Base's history is intertwined with that of local communities from the installation's inception in the early 1940s before World War II began. In fact, it was a wealthy local landowner who offered to lease part of his land to the Army Air Corps for $1. That, in essence, was the birth of Sheppard Field, which later became Sheppard Air Force Base.
Just as Sheppard AFB has had a profound impact on North Texas, so, too, have communities surrounding the base. Not only do these communities have friends and neighbors in them, but they also supply the civilian and contractor workforce that aids in training Airmen today for tomorrow's Air Force. These cities are also integral in providing key and essential services to our military and civilian Airmen as well as a large number of retired military members and their families.
Thank you to these incredible partners that make the mission of Sheppard Air Force Base successful.
