Brittany Curry 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- An Air Force Senior Advisor for Military Professionalism presented sessions on “Professionalism: Enhancing Human Capital” on behalf of the Profession of Arms Center of Excellence to Team Sheppard Jan. 31 - Feb. 1, 2017. Lt. Col. Kevin Basik presented portions of PACE’s course to members of both the 82nd Training Wing and 80th Flying Training Wing, as well as base leadership. Injecting his own flare of anecdotes and lessons from life and career experiences, Basik set out to help Airmen and leadership realize the importance of staying “tuned in” to what motivates and fuels others because “the mission happens through the people.” According to the PACE web site, the course “is an inspiring, optimistic and enjoyable opportunity that helps us to focus on bringing out a better version of ourselves as well as a better version of those around us.” Topics include: The attributes and dangers of personal bias Effective communication techniques The phenomenon of entrenched thinking How power changes relationships—for good or bad Tools to use immediately in your work space Developing productive, healthy relationships (at work and home) Importance of knowing your people Consideration for leading others Mandate verses organic leadership skills Basik, a 1993 graduate from the Air Force Academy, received his Masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from Virginia Tech with focus on small team leadership, and earned his PhD in Organizational Behavior from Florida State University. He’s a published author, scholar, and most importantly, a proven leader and practitioner in elevating character and leadership capabilities in individuals and organizations. Prior to his current assignment at the Pentagon, Basik directed all developmental programs at the Air Force Academy’s Center for Character and Leadership Development, and helped shape the Air Force’s strategic approach for professional development.
