Before beginning the day’s event, the children had the opportunity to learn about the purpose of the event – to raise awareness for childhood cancer. Children ages 1-5 kicked off the event by riding in wagons, suiting up in helmets and protective gear, and riding around the parking lot track on tricycles and scooters. Following the tricycle rides, the children were able to participate in activities provided by sponsors for the event. Children were able to explore the inside of a patrol car and a fire truck provided by security forces and the fire department, walk through the bomb truck and learn about explosive ordnance disposal equipment provided by the EOD flight, receive souvenirs from the Airman and Family Readiness Center and enjoy snacks provided by the Sheppard Parent Advisory Board. The Trike-a-Thon is a Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital event that can be coordinated at any preschool or day care nationwide. It raises awareness for childhood cancer while teaching children riding toy safety as well as accepting sponsorships and donations for the hospital.
