POCs NEEDED

The base blood program officers are seeking unit POCs to coordinate blood drives around the installation. Civilian blood agencies perform blood drives on military installations across the US and this is a unique opportunity to make an impact in the local community and across the US, while learning more about how our civilians partners assist with the Defense Blood program.

  • Civilian blood agencies perform blood drives on military installations across the US to help bolster a safe blood supply. The blood that is collected locally is generally used locally or provided to other military treatment facilities and VA facilities to ensure they are able to provide critical care patient needs. In the past 2 years, our installation has been able to support Elmendorf AFB hospital, Brooke Army Medical Center, Keesler Medical Center and the Houston VA Medical System with blood collected at Sheppard AFB!

Squadron should identify a POC to assist with future blood drives that may occur in the unit. Each POC will be responsible for coordinating the blood drive for their squadron with guidance from the base program POCs.

Please contact the installation blood program managers below with any questions:

FROM THE RETIREE ACTIVITIES OFFICE

What? Sheppard AFB Retiree Activities Office and Hospice of Wichita Falls is honoring our local veterans called Salute to Service. The timing has been perfect as Hospice of Wichita Falls is getting ready to make September their focus to honor veterans in hospice and would like to incorporate Salute to Service as one of their new programs.

WHO? The Salute to Service program would consist of a group of veterans (or active duty, guard or reserve) volunteers from all branches of the military. The group would visit the veteran in hospice and perform a short ceremony honoring the veteran and their family for their service to our country as they near their end of life.

WHY? We want every veteran to know their military service is appreciated. Volunteers can sign up through the Sheppard AFB Retiree Activities Office.

Email sheppardrao@gmail.com or by calling (940) 676-5088 Mon - Fri 10-2. Dates volunteers will be needed will be determined by the need at Hospice of Wichita Falls. For questions you can reach me at michelehouck12@gmail.com or Coby Elkins at Sheppard RAO.

SAFETY CORNER – LABOR DAY WEEKEND SAFETY & END OF 101 CRITICAL DAYS OF SUMMER CAMPAIGN

With the end of summer quickly approaching and the Labor Day Weekend celebrations ahead of us, let’s continue to stay safe and make mindful off-duty risk management decisions. Along with the Labor Day Weekend approaching, also comes the end of the 101 Critical Days of Summer Campaign. Although this campaign’s run is ending, does not mean we shall stop using safe off-duty risk management with all of our activities!

Quick Tips

  • Remember safe driving techniques while traveling.
  • Give your full attention to the road; get plenty of rest.
  • Keep grills 10ft from structures; keep kids and pets away from grills.
  • Be safe in and around water; watch over children and inexperienced swimmers.
  • Stay hydrated and wear light colored, loose clothing especially if outside.
  • Share travel plans with friends & family.
  • Know your physical limits; be prepared for plans in the great outdoors.
