For those individuals at Sheppard who might need a bit of assistance in the running department, the base Health and Wellness Center might be able to help with a program that aims to help improve cardiovascular fitness.

The Running Improvement Program, designed to increase running form and cardio, uses an individualized approach when it comes to helping its clients.

"The HAWC has been doing this for about three years," said Brian Todd, a Health Promotion Educator at the HAWC. "It's designed to prevent injuries."

A large majority of physical training injuries that come out of the medical clinic are running related, which birthed the need for a program aimed at preventing those injuries.

One of the main things Todd looks for when helping people is running style, feet, shoes, strengths and weaknesses.

"I make sure they do it correctly and efficiently," Todd said.

Todd lists many common mistakes, such as improper running form or shoes as the reason for a lot of injuries.

"It's usually some sort of bio-mechanical ability," Todd said.

Todd sees running as an activity that can incorporate preventive measures and still be engaging.

"Running can be cool, fun and injury free," Todd said. "That's what it's all about."

Todd uses the running program as both a post-rehab and preventive injury program as well. Todd processes people with exercise profiles, recommends exercise changes and teaches them how to get into an overall fitness lifestyle.

Todd emphasizes a one-on-one approach when it comes to the advice he gives people.

"They have something that's tailored to their needs," Todd said."Everybody's different."

Todd lists the individualized approach he takes as unique to Sheppard Air Force Base.

"We're one of the few bases that do it," Todd said.

The interaction with his clients is one of the favorite parts of the job for Todd.

"All in all it's a pretty enjoyable job," Todd said. "I just enjoy seeing how I can help people."
