Halloween no time to forget about safety Published Oct. 23, 2012 By Airman 1st Class Jeremiah Foster 82nd Security Forces Squadron SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Halloween is an exciting time full of fun and festivities; however, the majority of the simple activities associated with it can become tragedies if the proper precautions are not taken. In an effort to raise awareness of some of the potentially hazardous situations that could arise during this time, please take time to review some of the following general safety tips to help ensure a happy and safe Halloween. There are large numbers of house fires each year resulting from carelessly placing Jack-O-Lantern's. While carving pumpkin's is a fun family activity, it is important to remember the possible fire hazards that can result from poorly placed pumpkins. For that reason, please remember to be vigilant whenever dealing with open flames. The events of Halloween night set the stage for a chaotic and crowded environment which creates a climate ripe with opportunities for criminals to engage in misdeeds. It's always important to reinforce to children the absolute necessity of never associating with strangers. Children should be kept within eye sight at all times in order to avert any incidents. Selecting the right costume is another decision that should be well thought out before deciding on a design. The material used should be constructed of non-flammable properties and assure a proper fit. Loose material or draped/longer costumes that may drag could create a catching or tripping hazard so ensure a proper fit. Another important item to consider is how may the costume affect the child's visibility...masks or other costume coverings should not diminish the wearers sight lines include their peripheral vision. Masses of roaming children and the visually stifling presence of nighttime make for perilous roadways. Drivers should be sure to drive slowly and keep an eye out for pedestrians. It must be reinforced to children how absolutely vital it is to look both ways before crossing streets and only doing so at a safe juncture. Additionally, it is paramount that glow in the dark bracelets, reflective belts, glow sticks and/or flashlights be utilized by all children and adults while they are out carousing the streets. Equipping one's family with any of these items could mean the difference between life and death. Some general tips to remember: - Have a plan before you set out trick-or-treating and be prepared. - Inspect all acquired candy and always be weary of homemade goods as they could be poisoned or contain some other harmful element or device. - Keep pets indoors as some individuals do target them (especially cats) at this time of the year. Working together within our families and our community we can greatly increase the security and quality of falls events by keeping all of those simple preventative guidelines in mind. In addition Security Forces "Cops and Goblins" patrols will be out there with everyone on the night of the 31st to ensure a safe atmosphere. Trick-or-treat hours this year on base are from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm. Have a fun and safe Halloween!
