February is Dating Violence Prevention Awareness Month Published Feb. 14, 2012 By Val Cook 82nd Training Wing Sexual Assault Response Coordinator SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- February is our most "romantic" month of the year, but what some might not know is February is also "Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month." It's hard to believe that Cupid has to be concerned with sexual assault! It all comes down to respect and consent which go hand-in-hand in earning respect. Be sure to ask for consent first. If you're out celebrating and meet that "special someone," remember to get consent; it could save your career later and help build a long-lasting relationship. Should you find yourself or a Wingman in a compromising position, it helps to know how to intervene or become an active bystander. The SARC office can teach Sheppard members how to do that during target intervention classes. These classes are open to Airmen in Training, permanent party and family members above the age of 16. Our classes are held the second and fourth Saturday of each month in building 920, C Wing on the ground floor. If you are interested in attending, call the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response office at (940) 676-0365, to sign up. Remember that "real" Wingmen protect. To quote a good friend, "You can decide what words you use and what actions you take, but you don't get to choose the consequences." If you feel that you've been a victim of sexual assault please call the Sexual Assault Hotline at (940) 676-7272, we're here for you 24/7.
