Tax season has rolled around again and although this may not be a favorite part of the year, those who qualify for assistance won't have to go through it alone.

In conjunction with the IRS, the Sheppard Law Center administers the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program at Sheppard. This means, individuals don't need to spend their money in order to have tax returns completed by trained personnel.

What to bring to the tax center

- Military or dependent ID card
- Personal and family members Social Security cards
- W2(s)
- All other pertinent financial records such as:
           o 1099s
           o Social Security income forms
o Other information regarding stocks, bonds, mortgages, other income, etc.
- Last year's tax returns if available
- Bank account number and routing number

All financial paperwork must be present before any service will be provided. For instance, if an individual can provide all of their W2s, but know a stock or mutual fund was sold in 2011, we cannot help them until they receive a record of that sale. For any questions about payments to or from the IRS, including prior years' returns, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040 or visit their site at www.irs.gov for more information and a tax transcript.

The Sheppard Tax Center is located in the law center in Bldg. 315 and will be open for services beginning Jan. 23, Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., until April 17. Clients are served as walk-in basis first come first served only. Provided services are Federal and State Tax returns completed by a trained individual in a one-on-one session and will be filed electronically on your behalf.
