Student Pilots host Boy Scout Aviation Day Published Dec. 6, 2011 By 2nd Lieutenant Sara Harper 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Student pilots from the 80th Flying Training Wing hosted the second annual "Boy Scout Aviation Day" for 32 Boy Scouts from the surrounding community Dec. 3 at Sheppard Air Force Base. "As a class we felt like it was important to give back to the community, and we thought that teaching young kids about aviation was a good way to let them know what's going on in their community," said 2nd Lt. Adam Pollock, community service officer for Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Class 12-03. There were many requirements to receive the aviation badge, so the day was full of learning. The Boy Scouts learned basic navigation and aerodynamics, built small model air planes which quickly turned into an impromptu competition, and learned about different career paths for both military and civilian aviation. One of the requirements was to conduct an aircraft pre-flight inspection, so each Boy Scout performed a walk around of the T-38C Talon to learn what to look for before taking a plane to fly. "The highlight for the day was going out to the T-38 and trying to get them out there before the rain hit," said Pollock. "We started planning the event in mid October," he said. "All 27 members, representing four different countries from class 12-03 took part in the day." In addition to Boy Scout Aviation Day, student pilots from ENJJPT Class 12-03 worked with Habitat for Humanity in March; after both events their total community service hours are more than 250.
