Sheppard Air Force Base Civil Engineering will be changing the traffic pattern at the Main Gate traffic signal where Avenues D&E and 1st Avenue intersect Sept. 28.

Currently at 1st Avenue westbound, the left lane must turn left toward the gate and the right lane must proceed straight at the D&E intersection traffic signal. After Sept. 28, the left lane must still turn left, but both left turn and straight movements will be permitted from the right lane. Essentially, vehicles on 1st Avenue westbound will be able to turn left at the traffic signal onto Avenue D from both lanes and exit the base through the Main Gate.

To implement the change, the appropriate traffic signal, pavement markings and roadside signage will be altered as shown on the attached graphic.

This change should make it easier to exit the base at the end of the duty day, but drivers turning left from the 1st Avenue left lane, please remember you'll have traffic to your right and won't be able to change lanes as easily as before. Drivers exiting the base on 1st Avenue should plan ahead and be in the right if traveling toward Burkburnett and in the left lane if traveling toward Wichita Falls.

Please remember that established driving patterns are difficult to break and changes hard to adjust to. We ask that drivers be particularly vigilant while in this area as everyone gets used to the new configuration.

Please contact Mr. Jay Gilmore, 82nd Civil Engineering Squadron, at 676-5704 with any questions or concerns.
