What's Going on in Your Child's School Published Aug. 17, 2011 By Danny Webb 82d Traning Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AFB, TX -- Mike Wenk, Airmen Family Readiness Center School Liaison officer, is the link between the base and the school districts surrounding Sheppard Air Force Base. There are seven public schools and four private schools that he is responsible for: Wichita Falls, Burkburnett, Electra, City View, Archer City, Henrietta, Holiday, Iowa Park, Wichita Falls Christian, Christ Academy and Notre Dame and the charter school Bright Ideas. Wenk attends all school board meetings and keeps base leadership informed of what is happening within the school districts surrounding Sheppard where there are military children enrolled. He occasionally meets with school principals to see if there is anything needed that he may be able to help with. He speaks to faculty members about military children and the things that military children go through that a non-military child may not experience. The school liaison program was created to assist parents and caregivers of school age children to make sure they understand local education communities and to educate school administrators, counselors, teachers, on the military lifestyle and how it impacts children. The program is an advocate for military parents, military community and school districts. Wenk works with commanders, military personnel and families in meeting the competing demands of the military mission and families. The Airman & Family Readiness Center is located on the corner of Avenue I and 9th Avenue. If you have any questions, call A&FRC at 676-4358.
