Sheppard AFB could be in the running for up to $1.5 million this year during Air Education and Training Command's energy reduction contest that ends Sept. 30.

Glynn Batla, Sheppard's resource efficiency manager, said the base will target reductions in electricity, natural gas and water consumption to hopefully land one of the three monetary awards that range from $500,000 to $1.5 million. Thirteen bases in AETC will compete for the awards.

"You may have noticed increased activity around the base regarding the implementation of several energy projects that include the installation of new energy efficient lighting fixtures and controls," he said. "This project will continue throughout the year and will contribute greatly to the overall reduction of the amount of electricity used per square foot on base. Several more infrastructure projects involving heating and ventilation, scheduling and mechanical upgrades are planned too, but we need your help."

Mr. Batla said he needs the help of every military and civilian Airman as well as base housing residents to help Sheppard reduce energy consumption and bring home the top prize.

He offered the followed suggestions:
  • Stop water leaks and limit the amount of water used while brushing teeth, shaving or even taking a shower. A dripping faucet can result in 3,200 gallons of water wasted annually.
  • Unplug equipment when it is not in use. Even cell phone chargers, fans, coffeemakers, printers and monitors can consume electricity even though they are turned off.
  • Go green by printing only what's needed to get the job done. Always print on both sides.
  • Use an alternate source of lighting such as task lighting under desk cabinets if it is available. Although they, too, are fluorescent lights, they use less energy than common fluorescent office lights.
  • Inspect lights outside facilities to see if they are on during the daytime. If some are found to be on during the day, report it and have it repaired.
