Similac issues recall on powdered formula

SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas --  The Sheppard Public Health Flight is working with on-base facilities to ensure Similac-branded powder formula is removed from the shelves.

The Wichita Falls-Wichita County Public Health District is also aware of the recall.

Although the Similac recall lot numbers are unknown at this time, an official from Abbott said all parts of Similac-branded powder in the rectangular, plastic tubs are part of the recall. These include the 1.38, 1.45 and 2.12 pound tubs of Similac formula and the following:
  • Similac Advance.
  • Similac Advance Early Shield.
  • Similac Sensitive.
  • Similac Isomil Advance.
  • Similac Sensitive Isomil Soy.
  • Similac Organic.
  • Similac Organic and Similac Advance Organic.
  • Similac Sensitive R.S.
  • Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up.
  • Similac Go and Grow.
  • Similac Go and Grow Early Shield.
  • Similac Go and Grow Soy.
Customers who own one of the listed types of Similac formula powder in a smaller 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce or 12.9-ounce can should check the bottom of their can and compare the lot number with the Similac recall website at http://similac.com/recall/lookup.aspx to see if their product is part of the recall.

The Similac recall, posted at http://pediatrics.about.com/b/2010/09/22/similac-recall.htm, may include smaller 8-ounce cans that parents often get as samples from doctor's offices and hospitals.

Similac formula that is not part of the recall is:
  • All liquid forms of Similac formula.
  • All concentrated forms of Similac Formula.
  • Small-size powder forms of Similac formula; such as 0.6-ounce singles.
  • Similac Expert Care Alimentum.
  • Similac Expert Care Neosure.
  • Elecare.
  • Similac Human Milk Fortifier.
The Similac recall poses no immediate health risk to babies who drank the recalled formula. The recall was prompted because Abbott detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in the product produced in one production area in a single manufacturing facility.

Customers who have formula with one of the Similac recall lot numbers should stop using it and either find one that hasn't been recalled; temporarily switch to a small size powder, ready-to-feed, or concentrated Similac formula; or temporarily switch to another brand of formula.

Recalled Similac formula can be returned to Abbott through their website, http://similac.com/recall/consumer.aspx, or the place of purchase for a refund.

Sheppard's commissary has removed the applicable Similac-brand powdered formula from theshelves, but the Similac-branded liquid formula is still available.
