The new commander of the Air Force's largest technical training wing set a straightforward goal for Team Sheppard - meet the challenge of training 80,000 Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines each year to support today's challenging missions.

"I am confident that our team of military and civilians will meet this challenge head on with discipline, determination and innovation," said Brig. Gen. Darryl Burke. "We will accomplish the mission and take care of our people."

General Burke took command of the 82nd Training Wing from outgoing commander Brig. Gen. O.G. Mannon during a ceremony at the Sheppard parade field June 16.

General Burke said he was grateful and humbled by the opportunity to command again, especially a mission with such a significant role in the Air Force.

"AETC is an important command that is critiqued every day by every supervisor in our Air Force as our new Airmen arrive at their first duty assignments," the general said. "The expectations are high and Sheppard plays a vital role as the largest technical training wing in our Air Force and the home of Euro-NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training."

The general also said he is looking forward to working closely with Col. Kevin Schneider, commander of the 80th Flying Training Wing, and the men and women of the 8oth as a part of Sheppard's continued combined success.

He also thanked the community for its continued support of the Air Force and Sheppard.
"I've moved 12 times over the past 15 years," said General Burke. "One of the joys about being reassigned is the opportunity to make new friends. Not just friends within our Air Force family, but with those in the surrounding communities."

The general said he was eager to build upon the close relationship that is already established between the base and local community.

"Your reputation is renowned and the word has spread about your incredible support to our Air Force and this installation," said General Burke. "As you know, you are also vital members of team Sheppard."

He told the warriors of Team Sheppard that people are at the heart of our Air Force.

"They are the engine that propels the Air Force into the future," said the general. "As one who has previously commanded a wing in combat, I know that when air power is in well-trained, capable and competent hands, good things happen. Without well-trained and motivated individuals, even the best technology is rendered useless."

General Burke has served nearly 27 years in active duty and now brings his experience to Air Education and Training Command's largest training installation. The general is a master navigator with more than 3,700 flying hours, including 133 hours of combat time and 250 hours of combat support.

Most recently, the general served as the vice commander of 12th Air Force at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz.

Maj. Gen. Mary Hertog, 2nd Air Force commander, officiated the ceremony.
