Be sure to register early for Freedom Fest Published June 15, 2010 By Airman 1st Class Valerie Hosea 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Sheppard will host the biennial Freedom Fest July 3 from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Sheppard Clinic grounds. The open house is comprised of several events to include band performances and a fireworks display. Heather Newsom, 82nd Force Support Squadron marketing chief, said there will be two newly added events to the Freedom Fest. "In addition to live entertainment by Wade Bowen and an electrifying fireworks display, this year's event will feature a car show and volleyball tournament," she said. Competitors for the volleyball tournament and car show, as well as interested vendors, must register by June 30 to gain entry through the security check point. The Four-person Sand Volleyball Tournament will take place at 10 a.m. at the sand courts near the pavilion area. Each team can have a maximum of six players and must pay a $25 cash-registration fee at least one hour before the game. The winning team will receive a trophy and T-shirts. Car show participants may pre-register prior to July 2 by calling the Community Activity Center at (940) 676-3861 or online by clicking here. The cost to enter is $15. The first 100 registrants will receive dashboard plaques. Vendors interested in booth information may call Marnie McKenzie at (940) 676-7017. Mrs. Newsom said she encourages everyone the free-admission event for a day filled with family fun. "Sheppard's Freedom Fest is recognized as one of Texoma's largest community events," she said. "There's a lot of great food, fun and games for all ages. Freedom Fest 2010 promises to be one of the year's best." Security: Coolers, pets and weapons (knives, firearms, etc.) are prohibited in the event area; backpacks and hand-carried bags are subject to search. Parking: Off-base only, civilian attendees are required to use the Hospital Road Gate for entering Freedom Fest. When leaving at the end of the evening, attendees will exit from the Missile Road gate.
