Critical Days of Summer Campaign focuses on PMV safety Published June 7, 2010 By Airman 1st Class Adawn Kelsey 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Air Force and Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, will be focusing on private motor vehicle safety and awareness, as part of the Critical Days of Summer Campaign, during the week of June 7. According to the CDS 2010 Campaign website, private motor vehicle mishaps are the leading cause of death for Airmen during off-duty hours. James Zillweger, 82nd Training Wing chief of safety, said it is important to inform base personnel about private motor vehicle safety because of the number of deaths it causes. "Year after year, the number one focus has beenĀ (private motor vehicle) safety during the Critical Days of Summer Campaign," Mr. Zillweger said. "Sheppard didn't lose any Airmen last year, and I hope the goal of zero PMV fatalities stays at the top of everyone's list this year." He said everyone should follow the rules for driving requirements and take correct precautions, especially while driving for long periods of time. "For instance, if someone is driving back home to visit their family eight hours away, they should take a break every two to three hours and stretch to help them stay alert," Mr. Zillweger said. Secretary of the Air Force, Michael B. Donley, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, Gen. Norton A. Schwartz, and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Roy, confronted the private motor vehicle incidents in a memorandum for all Air Force personnel. "Drinking and driving, speeding, inappropriate alcohol use and extreme maneuvers are 'sure-fire' ways to get hurt," they stated in the document. "Four of the six auto fatalities this fiscal year have been alcohol related. Set a high standard for yourself and your Wingman, and remember that our actions have consequences." Mr. Zillweger said it is important to remember that being a good Wingman is more than just making sure your Wingman is buckling up or using the right precautionary measures. "Although one week may be (private motor vehicle) focused, it is important to know what to do and to prepare for any type of situation," he said. "The goal during the Critical Days of Summer is to educate personnel and prevent them, their Wingman or family members from becoming a statistic themselves."
