Now that the cold weather has passed and summer is here, Team Sheppard should be aware of the various types of injuries base personnel have experienced over the past six months.

Foot injuries have accounted for nearly one out of every four mishaps of all reportable and recordable mishaps occurring to base personnel.

With the warming weather outside, more people will take their feet to places they have avoided over the last few months.

Follow these quick tips and rules of the road to avoid injury.

· Wear comfortable, supportive shoes.

· Buy new running shoes often. Experts recommend getting new athletic shoes every three months or after 500 miles of wear. Overworn shoes may not absorb shock well or provide traction or protection.

· Wear good athletic shoes, such as shoes with cushioned soles, especially heels, and good arch support. Physical therapists, orthopedists, podiatrists and sports medicine health professionals can advise you.

· Do not walk barefoot in areas such as streets and parks where you have an increased risk of stepping on an object such as glass, rocks and sharp objects.

· Use a rubber mat to stand on if your work requires you to stand on hard surfaces. This will help to reduce stress on your feet.

· Reduce your risk of re-injury by wrapping your foot or ankle or wearing a supportive brace during activities or exercises where injury is a risk.

· Prevent blisters caused by poorly fitting shoes or socks.
