The winter season is here again and the ice on the roads, bridges and highways is a huge concern in North Texas.

Understanding simple safety tips will help all motorists get to their destinations safely.

"There are key points to for being prepared to drive in these conditions," said Tech. Sgt. Christopher McDonald, 82nd Safety Office ground safety technician. "When the conditions are bad make sure you slow down, stay alert and stay in control."

The winter conditions are usually the worst for ice in the morning depending on the weather that day, so allow a little extra time in the morning to get to work.

"If you are running late call your supervisor," the sergeant said. "It is better to get to work safely than it is to end up hurt or not get there at all."

Vehicle maintenance is just as important as being cautious while driving. Sergeant McDonald said motorists should make sure fluids and tire pressure is at the correct level. He said it's also wise to keep a safety kit in the vehicle.

The sergeant said no matter how far the drive, plan ahead and expect to take extra time to get there.

"Check the Weather Channel, radio or Internet for the weather conditions and hazards," said Sergeant McDonald.

He also advised while driving to keep and maintain a safe distance between the vehicles in front of you and to stay as visible as possible.

"Turn on your lights to help with visibility while driving and don't use cruise controls in the case that there is a sudden stop or the vehicle starts to slide," Sergeant McDonald said. "Make sure while switching lanes to check blind spots and move to the next lane carefully."

The sergeant said for more information to visit the Texas Department of Public Safety web site at www.txdps.state.tx.us, and remember to slow down, stay alert and stay in control during the winter travels this year.
