13 Airmen return from deployment Published Nov. 30, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Candy Miller 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Thirteen 82nd Security Forces Squadron Airmen were greeted by family and friends to welcome them back from a deployment Nov. 25 at the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport. Maj. Joe Wildman, 82nd SFS commander, said the Airmen were conducting the standard security operations in Southwest Asia during the deployment. "While the Defense Department continues to deploy troops, we continue to provide support to the fullest extent of our abilities," he said. "It was definitely a successful mission because they protected everything they were responsible for." The squadron commander said he was proud of the Airmen and their performance was "key to the success of national security." Airman 1st Class John Winter, an Airman returning from the deployment, said he was proud that he made a difference supporting Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and the Horn of Africa. "It's nice to see that people support us and they took the time to come welcome us home," he said of the crowded airport filled with Airmen, Patriot Guard Riders and friends. Family members also expressed feelings of pride and excitement during the return. "I understand the sacrifice but it was still very difficult," said Kever Swafford, the husband of a deployed Airman said. "I haven't seen my wife in six months, but I know she was fighting for a good cause." The Airmen were giving thanks for returning just in time to spend Thanksgiving with loved ones. "Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I didn't think I would return in time to spend it with family and friends," Airman Winter said. "I realized that I have a lot to be thankful for." He said he has been overwhelmed with anticipation for the past couple days. He said he was proud of his squadron and the success of the deployment "but nothing compares to being home." "This is what I've been waiting for since I left," Airman Winter said with enthusiasm.
