A troupe of actors came to Sheppard Oct. 16-17 hoping to impart their knowledge and understanding of a very delicate topic.

"Domestic Violence, The Musical!" is a show designed to focus on and disprove the myths of domestic violence and also teach victims and onlookers how to get out or intervene in an abusive relationship.

"To have knowledge about domestic violence is to have the tools to get out of the situation or help someone else get out," said Loren Marsters, narrator and writer for the play.

Songs from the perspectives of the victim and abuser help demonstrate the thought process of both parties to help educate proper responses to certain behavior.

Linda King, founder of Fix the Hurt, devoted herself to speaking and teaching about domestic violence after a personal tragedy sparked her to educate herself about such abuse.

The musical branched off from Fix the Hurt as a teaching tool and has traveled across the Southwest. It will also make a stop at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.

More than 2,200 Airmen attended the three shows performed at the base theater.

Airman 1st Class Stephanie Cortez, 82nd Medical Operations Squadron mental health technician, said she learned a lot about domestic violence and enjoyed the creativity of the show.

"The musical was very fun and interactive and it was neat to see a group take such a difficult topic and turn it into the informative show that it was," she said.
