Hours of work, preparation, dedication and volunteers make the Wichita Falls' FallsFest Sept. 25-27 event a huge outdoor annual festivity for North Texas. But lots of preparation the week before - and tear down afterwards - takes a lot of volunteers to make the event go off without a hitch.

In steps more than 230 volunteers from Sheppard Air Force Base that assisted throughout the week and during the weekend to set up and break down FallsFest.

Kathy Porter, a co-steering community chair, said the volunteers from Sheppard make a big impact when it comes to setting up. She said they helped set up 400 chairs and 100 tables, post signs, move some of the booths and much more.

Joe Viavattene, co-steering community facility chair, said it couldn't be done without the support of Sheppard.

"They help with so many things. They take care of security, collecting ticket stubs, directing traffic and manning booths," she said. "They are always looking for something to help with. They have an amazing work ethic. I never hear them say 'it's not my job'. It is an excellent and proud experience to work with them."

Stephanie Jones, the co-director, said since the inception of the FallsFest, community partners and the help of Sheppard volunteers have put $1.2 million back into the community.

She said as a "thank you," all the volunteers get into the event for free.

Some of the volunteers for the FallsFest are veterans and others are being introduced this year.

"This is my fourth year volunteering. It feels great to know that I am giving back to the community and it is a great way to network as well," said Tech. Sgt. Shaun Lemke, 372nd Training Squadron operations manager. "I come every year with my wife and kids and always have a blast."

Staff Sgt. Amy Flores, 82nd Force Support Squadron, said this was her first year volunteering and that it's been a fun experience working with all everyone. She said she is going to attend this weekend's festivities.

Mr. Viavattene said Sheppard members are appreciated for every bit that they do.
This year, the 24th annual FallsFest, is being held at Lucy Park Sept. 25 - 27. The festivities during the weekend include great food, music, games and activities for all ages.
