MTIs invite Sheppard Airmen to volunteer for new role Published Sept. 9, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Matthew Varga 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Air Force is currently searching for fresh faces to join the military training instructor corps. As part of this search, Air Education and Training Command sent MTIs from base to base to explain their role as an instructor to try and interest the young NCOs and senior airmen to take part in the instrumental and invaluable job of being an MTI. Tech. Sgt. Daniel Reed, MTI for the 737th Training Support Squadron, made at stop at Sheppard Sept. 3 to talk about what being an MTI means and some of the benefits offered. "Forget everything you think you know about MTI's. Control, alt, delete that," he said. Tech. Sergeant Reed said that many changes have been made in the last year to the MTI career field such as the switch to the eight-and-a-half week training plan that started November 2008. The whole career field has undergone a facelift, but there were other much needed changes as well. "Duty hours have slowly gotten better. Since we have more time in the course to teach the curriculum we don't have to spend so much time with the trainees," he said. "We have also moved away from the drudgery of folding clothes and making beds and moved in the direction of war skills and self aid and buddy care, teaching the tools that young Airmen will need while they are deployed." Tech. Sergeant Reed said interested Airmen that qualify should look into it because there are significant benefits.
