Local group honors SFS sergeant Published May 13, 2009 By Airman Adawn Kelsey 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Optimist Club of Wichita Falls honored one of Sheppard's own May 12 with the annual Respect For Law Award for superior service as a defender at Sheppard. Staff Sgt. Joseph Hobert, an 82nd Security Forces Squadron installation patrolman, not only served here this year but also served part of the year at Tallil Air base. "The Army was very impressed with the job that he did," said Maj. William Lowery, 82nd Security Forces Squadron commander. Sergeant Hobert also helped with food, toy and school supply drives while he was at Talill and also worked with the surrounding areas, building rapport with the community by enforcing the laws there. "Between the locals and base happenings we had a lot of responsibilities," Sergeant Hobert said. "We did surveillance inside and outside the wire as well as traffic enforcement and worked on theft prevention and detaining the people committing the crimes." Major Lowery said that he appreciates all of the sacrifices Sergeant Hobert has made this past year being away from his wife who has a baby on the way and his two young daughters. The sergeant worked hard while he was away and when he came to Sheppard his work ethic did not change. "Sargent Hobert takes his mission as seriously here as he did down range, and we appreciate everything that he has done for us here," Major Lowery said.
