Christmas In Action Published April 30, 2009 By Debi Smith 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- When word got out that the community could use some helping hands from Sheppard for the annual Christmas in Action program, Staff Sgt. Jason Bales, an instructor at the 360th Training Squadron, jumped at the chance to be a team captain for a house in Burkburnett that desperately needed renovation. Sergeant Bales said this was the first time he's really been able to volunteer locally. He said he was constantly deploying at his last assignment at Grand Forks AFB, N.D. However his assignment here has given him a little more time. Despite taking three classes toward his degree and a new baby in the family, he wanted to do something that was hands-on and to make a difference. Sergeant Bales said he recently bought a house in Burkburnett and in return wanted to give back to the community, so he set out by personally selecting his 18 member crew. He spent a few weeks planning, gathering materials and leading his team toward a home renovation that would include a new roof, new windows and new bathroom. The day of hammering, painting, caulking and landscaping provided an extra dividend, some long term friendships and deep bonds between the community and Sheppard personnel. "I've never had the opportunity to volunteer before," Senior Airman Joseph "Ryan" Oliver said. "It feels good giving back and it's another chance for the team to get together and learn some new skills." Christmas in Action, in its 26th year, works year-round raising funds and awareness to assist families in need and the elderly who may not be able to do the work themselves. This year volunteers from Sheppard renovated 51 of the 60 homes.
