The Food and Drug Administration and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention have reported a nationwide recall of King Nut, Keebler and Austin Peanut Butter products due to possible Salmonella contamination.

So far, all recalled products trace back to peanut preparations originating from the Peanut Corporation of America, which supplies peanut products predominantly for institutional use. Name brand peanut butters sold in the Commissary such as Jif, Skippy, Smuckers, Peter Pan are not affected.

As of Jan. 20, 475 confirmed cases of gastrointestinal illness caused by Salmonella typhimurium bacteria have been identified throughout 43 states, including Texas. Cases have also been reported in Canada.

Salmonella bacteria are found in the intestinal tract of infected humans and animals. Salmonellosis is the name of the resultant disease and symptoms normally include diarrhea, stomach cramping and fever about 12-36 hours after eating the product. It is transmitted to others usually accidentally by contaminated food, fingers or utensils coming in contact with the next person's mouth.

Prevention involves strict food-handling safety, regular hand washing (especially prior to preparing food, eating and always after using the lavatory) and a routine policy of not sharing utensils or food.

How the Salmonella bacteria got into the peanut products originating from PCA is yet to be determined. For a list of products being recalled and for more information about the recalled products, please visit: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/peanutbutterrecall/index.cfm.

Please seek medical attention if someone has an illness that could be related to the recalled products. Information can also be obtained by calling the nurse advice line at (940) 676-1847.
