3 STEP up in rank Published Dec. 16, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Candy Miller 82nd Training Wing Public Affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE, Texas -- 82nd Training Wing Commander Brig. Gen. O. G. Mannon visited three unsuspecting Airmen Dec. 12 to award them with the Stripes for Exceptional Performance promotion. STEP promotions allow the ranks of staff sergeant to master sergeants to be promoted to the next rank without going through standard testing procedures. Staff Sgt. Tondra Clifton, an instructor at the 361st Training Squadron, and Staff Sgt. Franklin Hunt, a military training leader at the 365th TRS, were promoted to technical sergeant. The third promotion belonged to Tech. Sgt. Kevin Taylor, assistant flight chief for the 364th TRS, who was promoted to master sergeant. Sergeant Clifton's eyes watered as she received her stripe and accolades. "This is an honor and a privilege to be promoted," Sergeant Clifton said, "I'm still in shock." "Why are you out of uniform," the wing commander asked the promotees prior to sharing the good news. Each Airman analyzed their uniform, looking for the discrepancy. After getting a confused look on their face, and a chuckle, the general informed them that they were receiving a new stripe on their sleeves. "It's a very special day for (their families) and the Air Force," General Mannon said. He also said that this is a learning opportunity for the Airmen-in-Training to see an example of an exemplary Airman. "Pay attention to what (they're) trying to help you learn," he said, "(they know) what (they're) talking about."
