Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Walter Utz, and his wife, Lillian, found out Dec. 7 how precious unexpected gifts are, and what a blessing they can be in a time of need.

The couple was doing some normal grocery shopping at the Sheppard Commissary when Donna Romolton, a store manager, approached them.

Ms. Romolton told them an anonymous wingman donated $200 to the commissary to share with customers that may be in need.

Emotions overwhelmed retired Segeant Utz and Mrs. Utz after they received the monetary gift. Sergeant Utz said he greatly appreciated it because he had just received a $260 bill he wasn't expecting.

"Some people just don't have it and it's great when someone can do something like this," he said.

He said the gift improved his holiday spirit because he knows people care about him and his family.

The donor, a commissary customer, gave the money and a note to Ms. Romolton and asked her to give it to someone who is kind and courteous despite their situation.

"Despite our status or position, we are all just trying to get through the day. The only thing that makes it easier is the loving kindness we show one another," the donor's note read.

Ms. Romolton said she is amazed that the customer was so thoughtful of people in need and it perfectly demonstrated 'never leave a wingman behind.'

"This is one (person) looking out for... military members," she said. "She's opening her heart and trying to improve the holiday. We don't see that in this day and age very often."
