Bob Johnston, the executive director of the nonprofit organization City Impact, knows what it's like to need support from charities that receive funds from the Combined Federal Campaign, which began Sept. 2 with a kick-off breakfast.

The campaign gives federal employees a chance to "Be a star in someone's life," this year's theme.

Mr. Johnston said the rewards you get from planting seeds in peoples' lives and helping others are greater than material things you can buy.

"I believe in the impact it has," he said.

He said he realized the importance of donating when he was in the Army. He didn't want to donate to the Army Emergency Relief, but when his home caught fire and he lost all his belongings, he said the Army Emergency Relief was there to help.

When it comes time to donating, Mr. Johnston said, people don't think they need anything from the listed organizations. But he said to remember those in need.

Sheppard's goal this year is to raise $307,840 for the various organizations. Last year Sheppard easily eclipsed its goal of $274,400, raising $336,482.

CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign. Pledges made by Federal civilian, postal and military donors support over 1,700 non-profit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world, according to the CFC website www.opm.gov/cfc/.
