Street Smart seminar encourages Sheppard to be safe Published May 21, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Candy Miller 82nd Training Wing, Public Affairs Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas -- Team Sheppard got a graphic, first-hand look at what can happen when people drink and drive or don't wear a seat belt at the Street Smart seminars May 15-17. "We're here to tell you what can happen should you choose to drink or not wear your seatbelt," said Joseph McCluan, one of two firefighter paramedics presenting the event, "You can take the information and throw it in the trash, or take it and use it in your everyday life." The audience saw explicit photos and videos of wrecked cars and dead bodies- what can happen to people who drive without a seat belt or while intoxicated. They were not actors in makeup, said Mr. McIntyre, they were real people that died because they made the decision to drink or not wear a seat belt. "Most of the dead bodies Scott and I drag out of a car," Mr. McCluan said in disappointment, "they weren't wearing a seatbelt." The presenters used Airman 1st Class David Salazar, a Help Desk technician with the 82nd Communications Squadron, to show how drinking can impair your judgment. In the scenario, he was driving home and drove into a parked dump truck. "I had to have my mind set to me being the victim. It made me think a lot. Anything can happen," he said. Scott McIntyre, the other firefighter paramedic presenting the event, said "the number one killer of our military not in combat is car crashes. We want to show the dangers and consequences of their actions. We want to keep them safe." The presentation was given by the Stay Alive from Education organization.
