Two Airmen were killed when a T-38C Talon aircraft assigned to the 80th Flying Training Wing at Sheppard Air Force Base crashed during a routine training mission at about 7:55 a.m. today.

The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

We ask that you keep these families in your thoughts. We have established a family assistance center at Sheppard's South Chapel to provide support and counseling to everyone affected by this tragedy.

Because of the accident, the airfield has been closed to all air traffic, including civilian traffic to and from the Wichita Falls Municipal Airport. While we realize this will cause some inconvenience, it is necessary to ensure the safety of the airfield.

Emergency crews are on hand at the site, and a board of officers will be appointed to investigate the cause of the accident. Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has any photographs or video of the events before, during or after the accident, please call the 80th FTW at (940) 676-1601.

More information will be released as it becomes available.
