The Sheppard Senator's men's varsity softball team is set to begin the 2008 season with tryouts Feb. 4 at 4 p.m. on Field No. 1 located behind the new football fields adjacent to the firing ranger.

Coach Ron "Bama" Brown said he hopes to build on last year's new, but competitive roster. Active-duty members from all branches of the service stationed at Sheppard as well as reservists, guardsmen, Defense Department civilians, retirees and dependents over 18 years old can attend the tryout.

Although Air Force Instruction 34-266, Air Force Fitness and Sports Programs, varsity sports must be made up of 100 percent active-duty personnel. However, the installation commander can offer waivers for non-active duty members who are stationed or work at the base.

At no time can one-third of the roster be made up of non-active duty players

Players selected who require a waiver must have their names submitted to the sports center director. Approval by the sports center director must be granted prior to any non-active duty personnel being added to the official roster.

Since varsity programs are specifically designed for active duty members, non-active duty members can be removed or not selected for the official roster based solely on the discretion of the fitness center director, in conjunction with the head coach's recommendations.

All subsequent practices will be each weekday Monday-Thursday at 4 p.m. on Field No. 1.
