Seventeen men's and women's basketball teams are signed up to square off for the 2008 Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Tournament set to begin Jan. 18.

The slate of teams is diverse with Air Force and Army representatives from five different states. Teams schedule to compete in the men's division include: Sheppard Air Force Base; Lackland AFB, Texas; Altus AFB, Okla., Tinker AFB, Okla.; Holloman AFB, N.M.; Cannon AFB, N.M.; Barksdale AFB, La.; Buckley AFB, Colo.; Fort Sam Houston, Texas; and Fort Sill, Okla. Two teams competing that aren't representing military bases include Allkutz and Lawton.

Severe weather caused officials to cancel the 2007 event.

In the women's division, five teams will compete for the championship. The bracket includes teams from Altus, Tinker, Lackland, Fort Sill and Barksdale.

The first game of the tournament is scheduled for Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. at the Pitsenbarger Fitness Center when Allkutz takes on Altus in the men's division. The games will pick up again Jan. 19 at 8 a.m. in the Levitow and Pitsenbarger Fitness centers.

The double-elimination tournament is scheduled to have at least 30 games throughout the weekend, with the event culminating with the women's final Jan. 21 at 9 a.m. at the Levitow, followed by the men's final Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. at the same location.

Because of the double-elimination style tournament, a second game in the men's and women's bracket could be required depending on the outcome of the initial finals' game.
