The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention and Treatment program is working with Air Force Portal administrators to provide a link to www.thatguy.com, an alcohol awareness campaign that is quickly spreading through the Armed Forces.

"The site has proven very effective, mainly because it's humor based and doesn't come off as preachy," said 1st Lt. Erika Slayton, ADAPT element chief, 82nd Medical Operations Squadron.

Along with website access, ADAPT will hand out "That Guy" coasters, flyers, posters, cards and other paraphernalia on Wingman Day, Dec. 10.

"We plan to offer them in places where Airmen usually hang out, like the bowling alleys, the Mini Mall, and Buffalo Wild Wings at the mall," Lieutenant Slayton said.

"That Guy" is a Department of Defense-sponsored alcohol awareness campaign, using a peer-to-peer approach as opposed to the usual supervisor-to-subordinate lecture.
Instead of focusing on the seriousness of DUI-related deaths or damaged careers, the site shines a spotlight on the humiliation and alienation resulting from the compromising, obnoxious and sometimes harmful acts drunk people engage in.

In its attempt to reach those in the 18-25 age group, the site uses humor, perhaps pushes the boundaries of good taste and offers hard-hitting facts beyond the usual statistics.

The site features "That Guy" personality types, e-cards for telling a friend they behaved like "That Guy" and an "Am I That Guy?" self test. The site also offers video interviews with people who've either had the opportunity to point and laugh at "That Guy," or had the misfortune of associating with him.

Finally, the website provides information on finding help and treatment through TRICARE and Alcoholics Anonymous.

The website has won web awards, garnered attention from colleges and newspapers across the country and become a key element in TRICARE's Healthy Choices campaign.
