Almost 150 people came out to show their appreciation for the base Honor Guard at a luncheon June 14, put together by the Chief's Group.

Chief Master Sgt. Norman Thierolf, 80th Flying Training Wing superintendent, started the event with a few words in admiration of Sheppard's Honor Guard, pointing out the "huge amount of mileage these people have to cover to show respect for our fallen veterans."

He introduced Tech. Sgt. Ismael Paez, the new manager of the base Honor Guard program, who presented Chief Thierolf with a shirt and hat to thank him for the luncheon.

"We represent our organization, Sheppard Air Force Base, the Air Force and most importantly the heroes who came before us who allow us to wear the uniform," Sergeant Paez said.

Chief Master Sgt. Michael Crowley said the luncheon went smoothly, with burgers and hot dogs on the grill and plenty of sides to feed the crowd.

"We think the Honor Guard is a behind-the-scenes group until they're needed," he said. "We felt they needed some public appreciation. That's why we did this."

Sergeant Paez echoed the importance of the Honor Guard, saying he tells his members that it is one of, if not the most, important job they will do for the military.

As she sat down to eat her meal, Staff Sergeant Christina Lozano from the 82nd Communications Squadron said she has loved her seven months in the Honor Guard because of its crucial duties honoring those that serve.

She said she enjoyed "the sense of pride that you get representing the base," and was delighted by the luncheon.

"It's always nice to know that you're appreciated," she said.

Brig. Gen. Richard Devereaux, 82nd Training Wing commander, Col. Jeffrey Kendall, 80th Flying Training Wing commander and Chief Master Sgt. Jeannie McLean, 82nd Training Wing command chief were also in attendance, showing their support for the Honor Guard.

"It's easy to underestimate, but hard to overestimate the value you all provide for community relations and doing the right thing, which is integral to morale and our base," General Devereaux said.

Relaxing and enjoying the luncheon in their honor, some members of the base Honor Guard would make their next appearance in the community just a few hours later at the Texoma Christian Center for a color posting and flag presentation ceremony.
