With summer here and spring leaving until next year, many people will be taking time out of their lives to tidy up yards, mend fences or just plant a new garden. With this in mind, it's important to practice safety while working in and around your yard.

When working outside during the summer months, it is important to limit the time spent working in direct sunlight, according to Air Education and Training Command Safety.  Protect your skin by wearing a hat and applying sunscreen.

In addition to avoiding overexposure to the sun, yard workers need to stay hydrated.

"The conditions here are very dry," said Lisa Muse, director of outdoor recreation. "Make sure to continually drink water all day."

No matter what type of lawn and garden equipment someone uses, there are dangers inherent to its use that one should be mindful of.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, each year there are over 400,000 reported cases of people being treated for injuries related to lawn and garden equipment. Some simple precautions can help to protect against accidents.

Personal protective equipment should be used at all times when operating lawn and garden tools, whether electric, gas or manual.

Judge by the equipment they're using to decide what type of protection they need to use, said Mrs. Muse. For instance, while using hedge trimmers, someone would want to wear gloves on. While using a lawn mower, hard toed shoes or boots would be appropriate.

Face masks while using leaf blowers, to protect from large amounts of dust, and earplugs while using noisy equipment are also good precautions, according to AETC Safety.

Most importantly, Mrs. Muse said, people need to keep their eyes covered. "If you lose an eye, that's it, there is no replacing it."

Also, read all operators manuals and ensure the correct tool is used for the task at hand, said AETC Safety. When not in use, store tools in safe and appropriate places.

Finally, before using equipment, prepare the area you'll be working in. Remove debris, such as rocks or loose trash, and remove unsteady branches when trimming trees.

During the summer months, people should also be mindful of the weather. "If you see lighting, take cover," said Mrs. Muse.
