Being "fit to fight" is something every Air Force member is familiar with, but on May 19, some of Sheppard's smaller personnel also took the time to get fit.

A horde of children descended on the Sheppard track, their parents struggling to keep up with their youthful energy, as part of the Armed Forces Day America's Kids Run. Some walked, some ran and some dashed, but all of the children were there to have a good time and get fit.

"The idea is to get off the couch and out having fun," said Ray Talbott, America's Kids Run coordinator for Sheppard. "And to give them the opportunity to interact and have fun with their parents."

It seemed they were doing just that, with parents running along side their kids, cheering them on.

Emily Criss, daughter of Master Sgt. Jeff Criss, 372nd Training Squadron, said she was having fun.

"I like to do physical activities," the 9-year-old said, as her father jokingly added, "and we get a free t-shirt."

Sergeant Criss, who was out there with Emily and his younger daughter, Julia, said he felt it was important to impress upon them the importance of fitness.

"And it's fun," he said. "I get to spend time with them."

The event was open to all Sheppard dependents, and, depending on their age, the young runners ran either a half-mile, one mile or two miles.
