Armed Forces Day events scheduled Published May 16, 2007 By John Ingle 82nd Training Wing public affairs SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Those looking for something to do this weekend shouldn't have to venture too far as Sheppard personnel honor the armed forces with two days worth of activities. Beginning May 18, activities ranging from sporting events to a car show are planned to provide entertainment and opportunities for athletically-minded or novice "wannabe's" as part of Armed Forces Day weekend events. The annual Armed Forces Day Parade kicks off the weekend at 7:30 a.m. May 18 at the base parade grounds. All personnel are invited to view sister-service formations march in front of the viewing stand. Immediately following the parade is the Air Force 60th Anniversary Sports Day and Picnic. Events include tournaments such as golf and volleyball at 9 a.m. and softball and bowling at 1 p.m. A barbecue picnic will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the pavilion near the South Chapel. Live entertainment, a bouncy castle for children and a dunk tank will also be available for participants. Included in the May 18 festivities is the annual Chiefs vs. Eagles softball game near the South Chapel to officially kickoff the intramural softball season. Those unable to participate in the May 18 activities will still have plenty to do May 19. Six events are scheduled throughout the day. A 5K run at 7:30 a.m. begins the day's events, followed by a Half Marathon at the base track at 8 a.m. The annual Joint Warriors Armed Forces Day competition will begin at 8:30 a.m., pitting Airmen-in-Training and sister service trainees against each other. Cycling enthusiasts will get their taste of festivities with a 25-mile bike ride that begins at 9:30 a.m. A less exhausting means of entertainment and activities begins at 11 a.m. with an Armed Forces Travel and Car Show at the Community Activity Center. The day culminates with those possessing the most energy competing in a race - children. All children are encouraged to participate in their age group during America's Kids' Race at the base track. The race begins at 7 p.m. Contact your unit representative to participate in Armed Forces Day events.
