Dollars. Pesos. Rubles.

It doesn't matter the currency; $885 million is a lot of money. Sheppard contributed that much and a little more to the area economically in 2006.

According to the 2006 Annual Report provided by the 82nd Comptroller Squadron, Sheppard's Total Economic Impact was $885,240,795. That figure is comprised of three categories: payroll, expenditures and value for jobs created.

The economic impact increased by 13 percent from 2005 when the figure was $684,450,968.

The largest bill for Sheppard was for payroll, according to the report. More than $553 million went toward the payroll of military, civil service and non-appropriated fund employees in 2006. That number increased by 19 percent from the 2005 figure.

Expenditures was the next highest price tag for Sheppard with more than $232 million going toward construction, services, materials and equipment costs. Although expenditures went up by 3 percent from 2005, construction costs went down by 13 percent and materials and equipment dropped by 2 percent.

The services category increased by 20 percent from 2005 to 2006. Services include aircraft, trainer and housing maintenance, as well as logistics.

The report also indicated Sheppard provided 12,887 jobs to military, civil service and non-appropriated fund employees in 2006, an increase of 5 percent from 11,670 in 2005. Sheppard also indirectly contributed 3,382 jobs to the local community, a 2 percent increase over 2005.
