The Sheppard Library received great news March 27 when Brig. Gen. Richard Devereaux, 82nd Training Wing commander, stopped by to give them their award for being named best in Air Education and Training Command.

Libraries from across AETC were judged on their submission packets, based on the library's usage, its facilities, its offered programs and the availability and quality of its resources.

Kathleen Roseboom, library supervisor, said that the Sheppard Library has a high number of patrons - 25,000 to 30,000 a month, with an average of 2,500 books checked out per week - due in part to the base's technical training mission.

Airmen-in-Training get a great deal of use out of it, Mrs. Roseboom said, taking advantage of the facilities for study sessions as well as relaxation.

The library has plenty of options to help with both, including 20 computers for informational and recreational use, two floors of study and reading areas, a special separate children's section, Wi-Fi internet access, access to the Brew U coffee shop and numerous books and movies for checking out.

Airman Brett Lane, an AIT in the 362nd Training Squadron's crew chief course, said he visits the library about three times a week, using it to help with his studies and as a chance to relax.

"It's somewhere you don't have to come to pay to get online," he said. "It's comfortable here."

Programs offered at the library include children's story time, informative luncheons and an upcoming teens program.

Rebecca Caldon, a military dependent, said she brings her son, Zeke, to the library's children's programs regularly.

"They learn a lot from the other kids and the books they read," she said. "It's a very cheerful place for the kids."

In addition to story time, the library offers such varied activities as sing-alongs and cookie decorating.

"My son's favorite is singing the songs," Mrs. Caldon said.

"We want you to have a good time here; to feel welcome here. That's our job," Mrs. Roseboom said.

The library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m.
