Sometimes it's good to step back, take a look at things and wonder where and how an organization fits into the grand scheme of things.

That look in the mirror begins March 22 for Sheppard as it begins an initiative called Balanced Scorecard to examine how it fits into the mission of the Air Force and Air Education and Training Command. It will also determine what type of message Sheppard wants to send to its end user - the customer.

A team from AETC and 2nd Air Force will begin a two-day survey with base leadership, followed by a return visit April 11. The purpose of the visit isn't to measure how well Sheppard conducts its business; rather it's to align the leadership's vision with current operations.

"This is an exciting time for Sheppard as we look at how we can make our product better for our customers," said Susie Jarrett, chief of the 82nd Training Wing Plans and Programs office. "Balanced Scorecard will help us make a great product even better."

According to information provided by the 82nd TRW Plans and Programs, Balanced Scorecard is "a strategy management system for establishing and communicating an organization's mission, vision and strategy to customers, stakeholders and employees, and for aligning day-to-day work to the strategy."

In short, it will take a look at what the base does, how it does it and how the customer benefits. The end result will be a strategic map that contains near- and long-term aspects of strategic priorities. In other words, the scorecard will give wing and command leadership a road map that shows how to get where the mission is going in the future.

The combined major command and numbered Air Force team will conduct interviews with base leadership to gauge the grasp each has on the purpose of Sheppard's mission and identify customers served by the mission.

AETC and 2nd AF completed the process prior to filtering the initiative to the wing level.
